Buddhisticalish: A Little Bit Of A Definition

Bud-dhis-ti-cal-ish (booh-dis-teh-kul-ish). Adjective. 1. Slightly Buddhistical. 2. Referring to a perennial beginner. 3. Conveniently Buddhist. 4. Curious about the common positive elements of all religions.

-------- -------- -------- --------

1. Slightly Buddhistical. At least two qualifyiers away from being a real Buddhist. For example: A little bit Buddhist; Kinda, sorta Buddhist; somewhat Buddhist to a certain extent; a moderate touch of Buddhism, etc.

2. Referring to a perennial beginner. Someone who studies Buddhism casually and has some of the characteristics of Buddhists, but is lacking in formal lessons, institutional training, and/or religious indoctrination. Also, someone who occasionally meditates, infrequently attends retreats, and sometimes ponders Dharma talks, but has never taken refuge vows in Buddha, the Dharma or the Sangha. Also, a Buddhist wannabe...almost. For example, describing a person who hangs out with Buddhists at Buddhist gatherings and talks about Buddhist books, but when asked if he or she is Buddhist, the reply is noncommittal, like, "Is anyone really Buddhist?" or "Doesn't everyone exhibit a Buddhist nature?"

3. Conveniently Buddhist. Someone who doesn't adhere fully to Buddhist tenets 365 days a year. As in: one who relocates innocent spiders found in his house, but stomps on ants that invade his house; one who stops her car for confused squirrels that cross the road, but swats at flies or mosquitos that attack her on a jog; one who can spend 15 minutes liquifying a single raisin, but consumes an entire lunch at work in 3 minutes; one who gives dana to rich Buddhist authors and speakers, but won't look a homeless person in the eye; etc.

4. Curious about the common positive elements of all religions. Interested in enlightenment and nirvana enough to desire them. The search for the positive common denominators of religions that lead to the belief in the Oneness of humankind.
